The Rest of the Story…

Without going into detail on every aspect of every little thing I’ve used social media for, I’ve used it to fill audiences (at the time of my being in Nunsense, I set the record for ticket sales!); get donations, organize, and bring people to my charity events; and get loyal singers to follow around my karaoke nights around town. Word of mouth became the word of Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram!

Fast forward now to the present. Why have a formed a business around social media? Several years ago, my boyfriend became a REALTOR®. At the time, I was still running successful karaoke nights, and recording voices for commercials, apps, and video games. He began his career as part of a team, and the leader of that team had followed me on social media for many years. She took one look at me and said,

“You’re really good at social media. Can I just pay you to do it for us?”

I knew I was really good at raising money, getting hired, driving traffic, and chatting it up on the various platforms, but how would that work for real estate? Yes, I would do the job for them, but I wanted to do it right. In doing so, not only did I realize that what I was doing was social marketing and that needed a plan. I also realized that REALTORS® have very specific rules and laws to follow when it comes to marketing.

You can find a social media marketing class now, and it may even keep up with the times. But just a few years ago, that wasn’t the case. So, I signed up with coaches, both social media and real estate specific. I read books cover-to-cover about marketing, social marketing, social media, and more. I also believe in continuing education so I continue to do so.

To nutshell the rest of my business, that one comment in passing became a new career. Other real estate agents around the brokerage took notice and started asking for help. Get Social with Cat was born. I’m entering my 4th year as an official business, but as you can see, I’ve been in the game a very long time.

From the real estate world, I branched out to adjacent professions. From my work in theatre and radio, I began to be referred to clients in the arts and authors. Networking in the real world still really helps me a lot. The Chamber of Commerce and speaking engagements have opened doors to me and I’m very happy with the branching out into new areas. For example, who knew I would love working with authors?

That is the long and the short of it. Social media has worked very well for me and it can work equally well for you if you put in the time and are, of course, social! When you see someone in person, you want to talk about what’s new and not constantly remind them you are in business. Let your social media remind them of that so it’s in the back of their mind, and then just focus on the relationships you are building.
